Lahaina Carpet & Interiors celebrates its 47th year in business

LAHAINA – It is no small task for any business to reach a grand age in history; it takes hard work and dedication. Lahaina Carpet & Interiors is very proud and excited to celebrate 47 years of taking care of the people of Maui and Lanai, as well as Molokai. Not an easy feat.

Over the years, we have welcomed many competitors to Lahaina, and although some have now gone, we are blessed to have received the gift of continuous support from our loyal customers, as well as many new ones who have arrived on the island and have been recommended to us.

From our humble beginnings back in 1969 (we were young and ambitious waiters employed by the old Black Rock Terrace Steak House at the Sheraton Maui), we recognized a need, put our heads together and created a small carpet installation business – Lahaina Carpet Company – in 1969.

Cliff McQueen, former owner of McQueen’s Interiors in Hollywood, had a background in interior design and carpet. Doug Poseley and I, Dave Byars, just recently arrived from California (1966). We both had extensive background in water sports and golf! Actually, Cliff and I started laying carpet together, and Doug joined up with me when Cliff opened his own furniture store on Maui and later went on to real estate fame.

Our warehouse was located in the old cannery along with Ole Surfboards, Christina’s Laundry and Raden Boats, before it was torn down and rebuilt as the Lahaina Cannery Mall. Our office was located in Doug’s house on Wahikuli Road and consisted of a desk, phone, file cabinet and a dog named Puka.

As Maui grew, our commercial and residential accounts grew, along with our knowledge and expertise, and soon we were busier than we ever anticipated. In the late 1970s, weary with the physical demands of laying carpet and wanting to better balance our labors, Doug and I moved the operation to its present location at Limahana Place and began selling carpet.

In the 1980s, we added a larger showroom – rather than continue to show samples and sell carpets out of our cars! We also added more staff to keep up with Maui’s continuing commercial and residential growth and demands for decorating services.

The ’90’s brought even more tremendous growth and change for us – with still greater expansion to our showroom and staff – and we made a slight change in the name to Lahaina Carpet & Interiors.

Doug and I are proud of the quality reputation LCI has built in all these years, and we have never taken anything for granted. We still continue to work hard and dedicate our business to each and every person who becomes part of the ever-growing LCI ‘Ohana. To all of them, as well as new customers to come, we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You all are truly family, and we appreciate each and every one of you.

We also appreciate our hardworking staff. We are so fortunate to have several who have been with the company for many years.

Darla Phillips has been with LCI for almost 30 years. She is not just the office manager; she is also an important part of the Sales Team.

Alessandra Stout started in 2001 and wears many hats. She primarily takes care of the Accounting Department as well as window installation scheduling and repair parts, fabrics, upholstery and advertising.

Our amazing Sales Team consists of David Paulson, who joined us in 2004. David came with an enormous wealth of flooring knowledge, gathered over 30 years in the flooring industry, as well as being part of his family’s flooring business in Oregon before moving to Maui.

Lisa Hensser-Langello came to LCI in 2006. Lisa has over 25 years of interior design experience, as well as furniture, design and manufacturing. She is originally from Red Palms in Lahaina.

DJ Jordan joined LCI in March 2015. DJ moved from Southern California to Maui 17 years ago and brings with her over 30 years of experience in interior decorating, remodeling and property management.

Our receptionist, Jacqueline Biddix, started in October 2015. Jacqueline is not just the receptionist – she also takes care of our showroom.

Jeff Lewis began in 1987. With over 30 years of experience, he is an exceptional First-Class Upholsterer, and we are privileged to have him leading our Upholstery Shop.

Aldrin Benito started in 1996. He is not only Lahaina Carpet & Interiors’ driver – so if you see him around town, say “Hi!” – he is an integral part of our Upholstery Shop Team and also takes care of our carpet warehouse.

Finally, the people who put in the finishes touches for LCI: our amazing team of very experienced installers. One word describes you all: awesome!
