Couple opens Maui Sugar Shop in Old Lahaina Center
LAHAINA – Maui boy Zane Monteleone and wife Cynthia have launched a cutting-edge bakery business called Maui Sugar Shop in the heart of Old Lahaina Town, offering the West Side gluten-free, organically prepared pastries and other delights.
Born and raised here on the Valley Isle and a 2000 graduate of Lahainaluna High School – where he was a three-time Maui Interscholastic League wrestling champion and two-time state placer – Zane gained that renowned West Side work ethic in his upbringing.
This served as a pathway to a successful career as a restaurateur in quality establishments such as Star Noodle, Hard Rock Caf, and Lahaina Grill. He has also served as a coach with the MIL champion Luna wrestling team for 13 years.
He and Cynthia, now raising three young children, decided to start their own business with their restaurant experience. They launched Maui Sugar Shop when they found an ideal space three months ago in Old Lahaina Center next to the former KFC space.
Maui Sugar Shop offers gluten-free, organic ingredient, and sugar-protein balanced pastries, muffins, cakes and breads to the public.
Since opening in October, the new operation has already earned rave reviews with service to the Hyatt Regency Maui, Wyndam Resort, Montage Kapalua Bay, and Farmers’ Market in Honokowai.
“We’re open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and looking forward to opening seven days a week and for longer hours,” said Zane last week.
Maui Sugar Shop’s address is 878 Front St., Suite A-10, which might be confusing, as the storefront is actually in Old Lahaina Center parking lot. Just remember that it’s next door to the old KFC store space when your sweet tooth starts to act up.
