By Staff | Feb 21, 2013

LAHAINA – Returning to the West Side by popular request, Rebecca Kapolei Kiili will offer an introductory-level class on Hawaiian culture at the University of Hawaii Maui College’s Lahaina Education Center.

This three-session course will address understanding the society, beliefs and practices during the pre-contact period.

Kiili will also briefly discuss the history of the monarchy period, the events that effected the rapid changes of Hawaii and how that momentum continues to influence our contemporary island world.

This class is best suited for malihini (newcomers), visitors or longer term residents who are looking for a basic understanding and sense of place.

This class will meet on three Saturday afternoons from Feb. 23 through March 9 from 2 to 6 p.m. The cost is $144. To register, call 984-3231.

The Lahaina Education Center is located at 60 Kenui St. a quarter-mile south of Lahaina Cannery Mall, midway between Honoapiilani Highway and Front Street.
