KAANAPALI – Duke’s Beach House recently recognized Karyn Murphy and Kauna’oa Chris Garcia as the “Educators of the Month” for August and September, respectively.

Murphy and Garcia were selected based on their outstanding commitment to the betterment of the community through education.

“We’re thrilled to recognize both of these teachers for their willingness to go above and beyond when it comes to serving Princess Nahienaena Elementary and their students,” said Shaughn Helliar, general manager at Duke’s Beach House.

“Educators play such a huge role in the sound development of Maui’s youth. We’re proud we can do something to celebrate all their hard work.”

Murphy has been a teacher for 21 years in Hawaii, and she’s also taught in Connecticut and Nevada. In addition to serving as a second grade teacher, Murphy runs the school-wide recycling program at Princess Nahienaena Elementary and uses the money to purchase play equipment for the classrooms.

She loves seeing her students grow up to be happy, productive adults in the community.

Garcia is in her third year of teaching Hawaiian immersion at Princess Nahienaena Elementary. Prior to that, she taught Hawaiian immersion on Oahu for seven years.

The most rewarding part of her job is seeing the positive impact that Hawaiian immersion has on her students’ lives.

Murphy and Garcia were each awarded a $100 gift certificate to Duke’s Beach House.
