Walking food tours offered in Lahaina
LAHAINA – With the goals of keeping small town history alive, showcasing local eateries and products, and raising money for animal welfare causes, Local Tastes of Maui started in January.
Modeled after a tour owner Cindi Weldon found in Seattle, walking food tours are fairly new to Hawaii.
Tours have been established in Makawao and Paia, and owner Weldon decided that Lahaina would be a great place to expand her food and history walking tours.
Tours start out at the historic Pioneer Inn and visit a total of 11 food establishments, each one providing a specialty to sample.
During the walking tour, participants see history come alive while viewing historic buildings and learning about the whaling and plantation roots of Lahaina.
The tour has received excellent reviews in The Maui News, Seattle Times and on Trip Advisor.
Local Lahaina residents work as tour guides, providing personal insights about their town.
Tours in Lahaina take place on Tuesdays, in Paia on Wednesdays and in Makawao on Thursdays. All tours are slated for 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
