WAILUKU – Maui Medical Group recently opened its newly accredited Sleep Center located next to its Wailuku clinic.
This sleep disorder center and state-of-the-art Sleep Laboratory offers evaluation services and treatment for snoring, sleep apnea, insomnia and less common sleep disorders.
The center is led by Dr. Jamil S. Sulieman, who has been involved in the evaluation and management of sleep disorders for over 25 years.
Today, more than 40 million people in the United States suffer from sleep-related disorders such as snoring, fragmented sleep and sleep apnea.
However, only 5 percent have been diagnosed and treated, according to the National Sleep Disorders Research Center.
The most common sleep disorder that is diagnosed and treated at the center is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), a life-threatening disorder characterized by brief, repetitive interruptions of breathing during sleep.
Indicators of OSA include daytime sleepiness, loud and irregular snoring, obesity and morning headaches. Untreated OSA increases the risk of hypertension, stroke, heart attack and industrial accidents.
According to Maui Medical Group, most people are not aware that sleep ailments affect daily activity and lifestyle, and can also be associated with other more serious medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, premature heart disease, stroke and even sudden cardiac death.
