Learn to stay fit in the workplace

By Staff | Mar 24, 2011

WAILUKU — In recognition of Workplace Wellness Week in Maui County (April 3-9) proclaimed by Mayor Alan Arakawa, a Workplace Wellness Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, in the Kalana O Maui building.

Attendees will receive tips from health experts on how to stay healthy and fit in the workplace. Key areas of discussion will include diet and nutrition, ergonomics, exercise incentives, health education, health screenings and stress management.

“The Wellness Fair will offer our employees and public-at-large an opportunity to learn how to combat fatigue, manage stress and receive information on how to create or support a healthier workforce,” said Arakawa.

Studies have shown that a comprehensive Workplace Wellness Program can reduce sick leave, lower medical costs and reduce medical and workers’ compensation claims.

Successful programs also can assist employers with saving money by reducing absenteeism, lowering healthcare expenditures, decreasing employee turnover and increasing productivity.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, unhealthy behaviors continue to increase in the United States, putting people more at risk for chronic illnesses.

Exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet and not using tobacco can help people prevent and manage chronic diseases. However, many people in the United States do not have easy access to healthy foods and safe, convenient places to exercise.

The fair is sponsored by the County of Maui, state Department of Health and Maui County Nutrition and Physical Activity Coalition (NPAC).
