KAANAPALI — Craig Trenholme, senior superintendent at Kaanapali Golf Courses as managed by Billy Casper Golf, was named “2010 Superintendent of the Year” by the Hawaii Chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents Association.

At Kaanapali since 2006, Trenholme is recognized for presenting year-round, tournament-ready conditions on the Royal Kaanapali Course, host of the Champions Tour Skins Game from 2008-11.

Under his supervision, the Kaanapali Kai Course has been transformed into a local favorite, with its greens regarded as some of the best on Maui.

Trenholme was tasked with the completion of the Royal Kaanapali Course renovations and oversight of course maintenance of Kaanapali’s 36 holes, bringing it back to its original luster.

Trenholme’s contributions help Kaanapali earn top rankings from national and regional golf and travel media annually.

In 2009, Kaanapali was named the 11th “Best Tour Course You Can Play” by Golf Week Magazine and was given a 4.5-star rating (out of five) by Golf Digest in the magazine’s “Best Places to Play” guide in 2009 and 2010.

“This award is well-deserved,” said Ed Kageyama, PGA general manager of Kaanapali. “Craig and his staff work incredibly hard each day to ensure we provide phenomenal playing conditions for local golfers, guests from around the world and tour players.”

Kageyama added, “Craig has the knowledge, the leadership skills and the drive to help make our facility a success.”

Originally from Chicago, Trenholme began his career in the Hawaii sugar industry and then transitioned to golf course maintenance as an irrigation specialist at Hualalai Resort on the Big Island.

He then spent several years as an assistant superintendent at Kaanapali from 1998 to 2000. Prior to returning to Kaanapali to take on the position of senior superintendent, Trenholme spent seven years at Kapalua Resort, overseeing all three courses, including preparation for the PGA Tour season-opening event.
