Center hosts business workshops
WAILUKU — The county Office of Economic Development coordinates free “Brown Bag” lunch workshops at the Maui County Business Resource Center in Maui Mall.
“The ABCs of a Business Plan” will be presented by Susie Thieman of Maui Economic Opportunity on Thursday, Sept. 9, from noon to 1 p.m.
Participants will discuss the reasons for writing a business plan and receive an outline of the plan taught by MEO’s “Core Four Business Plan” course.
An instructor for the MEO program, Thieman has more than 25 years of small business startup and management experience.
“Government Contracts for Small Maui Companies” will be presented on Wednesday, Sept. 15, from noon to 1 p.m.
Every product or service acquired by the government is handles through a bidding process.
MEO’s Business Development Corporation (BDC) is partnering with the Hawaii Procurement Technical Assistance Center to assist businesses in becoming successful federal government contractors.
Evette Lau of MEO will lead this instructional workshop that introduces participants to the process of successful government contracting.

Learn the modern day process to establish and protect your intellectual property by attending “Patents, Trademarks and Copyrights” on Thursday, Sept. 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
John Wordin, SCORE volunteer and artist from Molokai, will be the presenter. Wordin has a Master’s Degree in engineering with 40 years of experience. He holds eight U.S. patents.
“QuickBooks for Small Business” will be presented on Thursday, Sept. 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. by Richard Kehoe, CPA and lead SCORE counselor.
This class offers hands-on computer training for beginners, as well as financial tools and support for a growing business. Users will learn how to record sales, receive payments, prepare invoices and balance the company checkbook.
A nominal fee of $45 will apply. This session offers a small class setting and personalized tutoring; follow-up appointments may also be scheduled.
Learn about “Starting a Business in Maui County” on Wednesday, Sept. 29, from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Led by Anna K. Ribucan of the Maui County Office of Economic Development, this seminar covers general information and requirements for starting a business in Maui County.
Handouts, websites and other helpful information are included.
