County of Maui announces furlough schedule

“Establishing a furlough schedule has been a complex process, and since this type of mandatory furlough program has not been implemented before for county employees, we will be closely monitoring its implementation. I appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation as the furlough schedule takes effect,” said Mayor Charmaine Tavares.
WAILUKU — Mayor Charmaine Tavares announced that all County of Maui civil service and appointed employees, excluding uniformed police and fire department employees under separate collective bargaining agreements, will be furloughed 12 days in the next fiscal year, July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011.
Furloughed employees include all managerial staff. The first scheduled furlough day is Friday, July 16.
The one-day-a-month furlough plan was proposed by Tavares and approved by the County Council as part of the county Fiscal Year 2011 Budget.
Tavares has also agreed to reduce her pay to the equivalent of 12 furlough days.
The Office of the County Clerk, Office of Council Services and council district offices in Hana, Lanai and Molokai will also be closed on scheduled furlough days.
Because the Nov. 5, 2010 County Council meeting falls on a furlough day, the meeting has been rescheduled to Nov. 9, 2010.
The county’s furlough schedule for Fiscal Year 2011, all Fridays, will be July 16, Aug. 13, Sept. 24, Oct. 8, Nov. 5 and Dec. 10, 2010; and Jan. 28, Feb. 11, March 11, April 8, May 20 and June 24, 2011.
