LAHAINA — Arsene “Blackie” Gadarian presented four $1,000 vocational scholarship awards from Blackie’s Machine Shop at the Lahainaluna High School Senior Scholarship Awards Program on May 12.

The awards were given to students in the Automotive and Woods/Industrial Arts departments.

Winners were selected by recommendation of the vocational instructors, who determined which student was qualified and will use the money to buy tools and pay for tuition for advanced training in his trade.

The winners were Aldrin Constantino, auto body; Emerson Pinera, auto mechanic; Ikaika Lum Lung, carpenter, sustainable housing; and Luis Pico, electrician.

Blackie also presented antique tools from Blackie’s Machine Shop: an auto body hammer to Constantino and torque wrench to Pinera.

Lum Lung received a carpenter’s tool belt, and Pico received an electrician’s tool belt.

Since 1981, Blackie and Sara Gadarian have presented a total of 192 vocational scholarships at Lahainaluna High School.

Blackie said, “You can always get a job when you work with your hands.”
