Jade Moon to speak at Mayor’s Small Business Awards event

Jade Moon will discuss the connection between business and the environment at the Mayor’s Small Business Awards dinner.
WAILUKU — Former KGMB9 news anchor Jade Moon will be the keynote speaker at the 2009 Mayor’s Small Business Awards dinner on Friday, Oct. 23, at the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort and Spa.
Kim Gennaula and Guy Hagi will serve as emcees for the evening.
The spokeswoman for Hawaiian Electric Company’s renewable energy and energy conservation campaigns, Moon is an award-winning journalist with strong roots in the island community.
As a news anchor at KGMB9 News for many years, Moon won a regional Emmy Award, Society of Professional Journalists’ Public Affairs Reporting Award and numerous other honors for her in-depth reporting.
Nominations for the Mayor’s Small Business Awards are open until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, in the following categories: Small Business of the Year (ten or fewer employees), Small Business of the Year (11-50 employees), Young Small Business Person of the Year (under age 40), and the Lifetime Achievement
Award for any individual doing business in Maui County for more than 20 years.
There is also a Nonprofit Angel Award for businesses with 50 or fewer employees that have contributed significantly to helping support non-profits.
Nomination forms are available by calling or visiting the Maui County Business Resource Center (MCBRC) at Maui Mall (call 873-8247) and at all Central Pacific Bank locations on Maui. The form is also available online at www.mauicounty.gov/mcbrc.
Completed nomination forms, along with two supporting letters of recommendation, must be received at the MCBRC no later than 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18. The mailing address for the MCBRC is 70 Ka‘ahumanu Avenue, Unit B-9, Kahului, HI 96732.
This theme of this year’s event, “1930s to 2009: Looking Back — Moving Forward,” celebrates the era that many of Maui’s time-honored mom-and-pop businesses got their start and began shaping a heritage of entrepreneurial caring, building relationships in the community, and fostering hard work and excellence.
The event is sponsored by Central Pacific Bank and other supporters of small business.
The Mayor’s Small Business Awards originated in 2004 as a way to recognize outstanding small businesses in Maui County.
