KAHULUI — David Fisher announced that he is leaving the Maui Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and starting Maui Venture Consulting LLC as of Sept. 1.

Fisher opened the Maui Center at MCC in September 1990, and moved in 1992 to become one of the first tenants at the Maui Research and Technology Center.

“It has been a great honor and pleasure helping entrepreneurs on Maui over the last two decades. In this economy, it is clear that more hands-on help is needed, along with greater flexibility and creativity,” said Fisher.

He has worked with more than 3,000 entrepreneurs to create over $100 million in economic impact on Maui. The U.S. Small Business Administration honored Fisher as the State of Hawaii Financial Services Champion for 2006 and as the Minority Business Advocate in 1999. He also taught the first Internet classes on Maui in 1990.

Maui Venture Consulting LLC will continue offering many of the services offered by SBDC, but also be available for more extended projects, including writing businesses plans, market research, website development, financial analysis, planning, fund-raising and organizational development.

Fisher will also be available to help nonprofit organizations, larger businesses and businesses outside of Maui.

An early priority will be expanding the CoolProjectsMaui.com blog, collaborating with other organizations and individuals, bringing on more contributors, and offering video tutorials and other online learning tools.

Fisher will teach “An Introduction to the Semantic Web” and “How to Grow Your Business” classes at MCC this fall, and he will continue to serve on the boards of the Hawaii Venture Capital Association and Akaku: Maui Community Television.

The Hawaii SBDC Network has started the recruitment process to have a Maui consultant on board by Fisher’s departure in September.

In related news, those thinking of starting a venture or business project for the first time, or experienced entrepreneurs considering launching a new product or service, are encouraged to attend “Starting A Venture in Hawaii” with Fisher on Thursday, Aug. 13.

Offered by SBDC in conjunction with the Office of Continuing Education and Training at Maui Community College, the class will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at MCC.

Participants will get an overview of how to evaluate business ideas in general, available resources, needs and issues particular to Maui. The class fee is $23, which includes a sample business plan, the booklet “Starting A Business on Maui” and additional resources. To register, call Pat Diaz at 875-2402.
