Honolua Store honored with BIA awards for commercial remodeling

By Staff | Jun 4, 2009

KAPALUA — Kapalua Resort’s landmark Honolua Store received two prestigious awards from the Building Industry Association-Hawaii.

During the 24th annual Renaissance Building and Remodeling Awards held recently on Oahu, Honolua Store garnered the Historical Division Award in the Commercial Remodeling category, as well as an Overall Grand Award for Commercial Remodeling.

Architects Angela Stiber and Glenn Mason of Mason Architects and Interior Designer Jim Tucker of James Tucker and Associates received the awards for Honolua Store’s extensive remodeling project completed in 2008.

The contractor was Breen Builders LLC, and Maui Land & Pineapple Company’s Community Development division served as project manager.

Judging criteria included creativity, design principles, materials used, value, visual appeal, overall quality and sustainability.

The renovation preserved the existing historic building while expanding the store’s grocery, wine and sundry offerings; adding a coffee bar; rebuilding the storage building; and installing a large, modern kitchen and full-service deli counter. An additional lanai was added to the north side of the store, providing extra seating. Honolua Store & Deli is open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
