By Staff | Aug 17, 2017

KAPALUA – The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua will be hosting a special, complimentary talk story presentation at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, with the original 1976 crew of the Hokule?a.

Local residents, the community and visitors alike are invited to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interact and ask questions of the crewmembers. Listen as they tell their tales of their experiences en route and upon arrival to Tahiti, their daily life and responsibilities on board the canoe and much more.

In addition to learning what sailing on the legendary 1976 wa?a was like, attendees will discover what is next for the crew and what the future may hold for these voyaging pioneers.

In honor of this historic weekend, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua also announced special $199/night kama?aina rates from Aug. 18-21 for local residents to enjoy this very special celebration.

The Mahalo, Hawai?i Sail will give the Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) an opportunity to thank Hawaii’s people, bring Hokule?a and Hikianalia home to all of Hawaii, share lessons learned from the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage, and deepen the organization’s connection and understanding of the important work being done here in the islands to care for the Earth.

In addition, Mo?okiha O Pi?ilani, Maui’s voyaging canoe, will join Hokule?a and Hikianalia. During the port visits, PVS will engage with schools and organizations through outreach events, service projects, crew presentations and canoe tours.

Honolua Bay was chosen as the first stop on the Mahalo, Hawai?i Sail, because it was the location where the Hokule?a’s maiden voyage to Tahiti was launched in 1976.
