Art in Bloom to showcase West Maui students’ talents

By Staff | Apr 27, 2017

LAHAINA – Art in Bloom is a student arts exhibit that seeks to bring art appreciation and awareness to the Sacred Hearts School student body and community.

Sacred Hearts School’s second annual Art in Bloom show will take place on May 13. This event will showcase the talents of youth for the entire community to enjoy. Collections, among many, will include three-dimensional art and inspirational Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Poems written by SHS students. These projects were made possible under the direction and guidance of art instructor Stacy Coon and Mary Anna Grimes.

The fundraiser portion of the event will include a silent auction and juried art show. The silent auction has been transitioned from the annual bazaar to this new event. This new art- and literature-themed auction will have collections to bid on based on a book or art project a particular student group is working on. The first grade class enjoyed learning about sea life, and theirs will be an ocean- and beach-themed collection, including boat trip tickets, beach items, a hydro flask and other fun items that anyone can come and bid on. There will be at least eight unique collections, including the eighth-graders’ Survival at Sea Collection. Items in the collection include a raft trip and nautical items that will make up the silent auction.

The juried art portion of this event is open to all young artists in elementary and middle school in West Maui. Children will have a chance to have their work displayed with prominent local artists. The youth work will be juried by these local artists, and prizes will be awarded for the top three spots (although all who enter the Juried Art Contest will leave with a gift). If your child is interested in participating in the the juried show, grab an application in the SHS school administrative office or print one at www.shsmaui.org/giving. The $25 submission fee, application and artwork (any medium ten inches by ten inches or smaller) is due by May 8 to the Sacred Hearts School office.

Admission to attend the exhibit and auction is free and open for the entire community. It will take place on May 13 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Mother Marianne Cope Hall at Sacred Hearts School. Corporate sponsors and juried artists thus far include Ronaldo and Jennifer Macedo, Jim Kingwell, Carleton, J. Anthony Martinez, Belinda Leigh, Aydin Say, Jennifer Yi, Stephanie Meyer, Body in Balance, Prison Street Design, Haleakala Solar and Maui Technology Consultants. If you are a patron of the arts and would like to be one of the juried artists or an Art in Bloom sponsor, call (808) 298-9679.

There will also be student entertainment and food for sale by Kobe Japanese Steak House, gluten-free treats from The Maui Sugar Shop Bakery and desserts created especially for this event by Grand Wailea Executive Chef Ryan Urig.
