Three masters to perform at May 25 Slack Key Show
NAPILI – Maui will enjoy a special event at George Kahumoku Jr.’s weekly “Slack Key Show-Masters of Hawaiian Music” on Wednesday, May 25, at 7:30 p.m. at Napili Kai Beach Resort.
The show will be a preview of the upcoming Hymns of Hawaii Tour happening in December 2016.
The show features solo performances by each of three heavy hitters of Hawaiian music: Kahumoku, Kawika Kahiapo and Richard Ho’opi’i.
Together, these masters will share the delightful experience of ki-ho’alu (slack key guitar) and leo ki’eki’e (falsetto) – the distinctly Hawaiian style of open tunings and Hawaiian vocals.
These three deeply spiritual masters will play some songs together. They are all known for their renditions of Hawaii’s most popular hymns.
Kahumoku, an ordained minister, will feature songs from his “Hymns of Hawaii” and other recordings.
Kahiapo, who is also pastor of a small fellowship on Oahu, said, “Love for the islands, its people, ‘ohana, and Ke Akua (God) are what inspires me.”
Ho’opi’i said his music is a gift from God. “In church, they sang himeni, Hawaiian hymns, and learned harmony and the importance of praising God with our best voice and with all our hearts,” he added.
The show will also feature the Slack Key Show ‘ohana; Wainani Kealoha, with beautiful hula; as well as Ho’opi’i’s wife, Ululani, who will dance for his performance.
