Ritz-Carlton to host free musical events

Last year, Sheryl Renee wowed a standing-room-only crowd at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua with her impersonation of Ella Fitzgerald.

KAPALUA – The public is invited to attend three free musical events apresented by the 2012 Maui Invitational Music Festival at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua on Wednesday, Feb. 1, and Friday, Feb. 3.

A talk story session with singer and actress Freda Payne is set for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1.

Best known for her 1970 hit single, “Band of Gold,” Payne has also appeared in films, television and on Broadway.

She has worked with such luminaries as Quincy Jones, Pearl Bailey and Bill Cosby, recorded 21 albums and toured around the world.

All are invited to join her for an intimate evening of talking story about her road to stardom and beyond.

Payne is appearing in concert on Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

Also on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., following “Talk Story with Freda Payne,” a free gospel workshop with Minister Reggie Smith will be held.

Smith, an ordained minister currently serving as the minister of music at Antioch Baptist Church in Youngstown, Ohio, is also a producer, lyricist, composer and recording artist.

On Friday, Feb. 3, at 5:30 p.m., vocalist Sheryl Renee and Friends, accompanied by Brian Cuomo on piano, will perform jazz and pop standards in a musical tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. to celebrate Black History Month.

Songstress, recording artist and actress Renee has shared the stage with some of the best musicians in the world and has the ability to cover most styles of music with her three octave range.

The evening will feature cabaret-style seating in the Anuenue Room with food and beverages available for purchase.

The Maui Invitational Music Festival is presented by Arts Education for Children Group (AECG), a nonprofit organization founded in 1996.

AECG is dedicated to providing opportunities for artistic and cultural enrichment.

This event is supported by the county Office of Economic Development, Hawaii Tourism Authority, Mana’o Radio, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua and SR Productions.
