Blackie and Sara Gadarian bringing back straight-ahead jazz
LAHAINA – After a 17-year hiatus, Blackie and Sara Gadarian are bringing back straight-ahead jazz to Lahaina in January and February 2012.
They are holding two events at Timba nightclub at 505 Front Street.
Jazz Event #1 will be held Sunday, Jan. 15, from 7 to 10 p.m.
Gene Argel will be playing Hammond B3 organ and leading a six-piece band.
Appearing with him will be Maui musicians Michael Buono on drums, Shiro Mori on guitar, Marcus Johnson on bass and singer Shea Argel.
Special guest Eric Schneider, alto saxophone player from Chicago, is joining the group.
Blackie said, “Sara and I have been musically starved for real straight-ahead jazz as it was played in our Blackie’s Bar in Lahaina from 1981 to 1995. So we are bringing it back ourselves with the outstanding Maui musicians who played with us there.”
Admission to the event is $15 in advance and $20 at the door; capacity is limited.
