MAPA to offer performing arts camps

WAILUKU – Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) is offering a variety of winter break performing arts camps for ages five to adult at the MAPA studios in downtown Wailuku.

Teaching artists Francis Tau’a and Tina Kailiponi will teach two Winter Drama Camps from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 19-23 and 26-30.

Students ages 5-9 may sign up for one or both weeks. They will have fun with acting, music, movement and visual arts. The camps culminate in performances of original productions for family and friends on the last day of each week. Tuition is $175 per week.

Students in the popular Winter Dance Camp taught by Rebecca Owen will learn dance skills in ballet, tap, hip hop, memorization, flexibility, coordination and teamwork. Geared for students ages 6-10, the dance camp runs Dec. 26-30 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The camp culminates in a performance for family and friends. Tuition for the dance camp is $175 for the week.

In the Winter Ballet Camp on Dec. 19-23 from 9 a.m. to noon, ballet students in levels I/II and II (ages ten and up) will work with ballet mistress Barry Brinker Jones to enhance technique, work on pre-pointe conditioning and learn holiday choreography. Tuition is $150 for the week.

The Dance Smorgasbord Workshops for ages 12 to adult will run Dec. 20-22 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. MAPA alumni Rachel Berman, Julia Cost and Ali McKeon will return from the Mainland for the holidays to teach three workshops in modern, modern partnering, contemporary and lyrical jazz for intermediate and advanced dancers. The fee is $20 for one workshop or $55 for three workshops.

All of the camps will be held at MAPA at 2027 Main St. in Wailuku (enter from Market Street). Space is limited, so register early.
