Maui Fil-Am Heritage Fest slated at Maui Mall

Enjoy a magical evening of operatic bliss with the first-ever Hawaii appearance of internationally renowned star soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. She will perform accompanied by pianist Terence Dennis on Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater. Dame Kiri gained legendary status in 1971 after her sensational debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden as the Countess Le Nozze di Figaro in “The Marriage of Figaro.” She has been a major international artist for four decades. The duo will perform selections from composers Scarlatti, Vivaldi, Handel, Liszt, Strauss, Canteloube, Rachmaninoff and more. Tickets are $75, $100 or $125; call 242-SHOW.

KAHULUI — To help celebrate Filipino-American History Month in October, the Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation will present the Maui Fil-Am Heritage Festival on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Maui Mall.

“The Maui Filipino Chamber Foundation is presenting the Maui Fil-Am Heritage to promote business as well as share our culture, our heritage with Maui’s residents and visitors,” said Elizabeth Ayson, foundation president.

“In 2008, Act 15 designated October of each year as Filipino American History Month, and we’re happy to help celebrate.”

The festival will begin at 10 a.m. with back to back entertainment featuring Dance International Production, La Galeria, Good Shepherd Church Dance Troupe, Maui Filipino Martial Arts Academy, Sharon Zalsos, Reynaldo C. Ramos and Paris Sensano.

There will be nine restaurants serving Filipino food: Cafe Central & Catering Drive Inn, Local Mocha, Four Sisters Kitchen, TJ’s Food Mart Fast Food Restaurant Catering & Bakery, Home Maid Bakery, Randy’s Catering & Fast Food, Family Restaurant Catering, Cupie’s Drive-In, and Paradise Supermart.

Along with the entertainment and food, there will be several contests, including Filipino Attire Contests for women at 10:30 a.m. and men at 12:30 p.m., with the winners receiving airfare to Las Vegas courtesy of Noble Travel.

And throughout the day, drawings for airfare to the Philippines, courtesy of Hawaiian Airlines and Philippine Airlines, will be held. Restrictions apply, including one entry per person. Participants must be at least 18 years of age and be present to win with proper identification.

Other features include the “Master P-Noy Chef Cook Off” featuring a few of Maui’s best chefs of Filipino ancestry, a Speedy Balut Eating Contest, business booths and historical displays.
