Garden Party supports MAPA’s performing arts programs
WAILUKU — Maui Academy of Performing Arts’ 23rd annual Garden Party will be held Sunday, Sept. 11, from 1 to 5 p.m. on the beautiful shady lawn of the Yokouchi family estate in Wailuku.
As you spend an elegant afternoon chatting with friends, sipping wine, indulging in fine cuisine and bidding on treasures and art, you’ll be making a difference in the lives of Maui’s children by supporting MAPA’s educational performing arts programs.
The theme of this year’s Garden Party is “Celebrating Broadway.” Some of the island’s top musical theater performers will entertain guests with favorite show tunes. Guests are encouraged to dress up as their favorite characters from Broadway shows.
The Garden Party features an impressive Chefs’ Festival with gourmet offerings from Maui restaurants, as well as world-class wines provided by Whole Foods Market and locally brewed beer from Maui Brewing Company.
Restaurants participating in the Chefs’ Festival include A Saigon Café, Buzz’s Wharf, Café O’Lei, Dad’s Doughnuts, David Paul’s Island Grill, Flatbread Company, Maui Chocolate Fountain, Maui Tacos, Roy’s Kahana, Sea House Restaurant, Three’s Bar & Grill, Vineyard Food Company and the Waterfront. During the Chef’s Festival, Moondance (Jim Howlett and Rudy Esquer) will play live jazz.
The event’s signature offering is Fresh Art. As guests meander through the picturesque grounds, they watch some of the island’s top painters and sculptors create beautiful works of art to be sold at the end of the afternoon by auctioneers Vinnie Linaris and Marsha Kelly.
Maui artists creating Fresh Art this year include George Allan, Karen Camara, Jackie Pias Carlin, Michael Clements, Joe Fletcher, Jack Hamilton, Susie Monroe, Jamie Roth, Janet Shaner, Koana Smith and Steve Turnbull.
The Garden Party also features a fabulous silent auction with hotel stays, activities, jewelry, artwork and themed baskets. The Garden Shoppe offers plants, garden items and unique gifts.
“MAPA has grown into one of the state’s largest performing arts organizations offering a full range of educational performing arts programs,” said Linda Howlett, MAPA’s board secretary and chairperson for the event.
“The Garden Party fundraiser has a direct impact on the success of our nonprofit organization. As MAPA’s largest fundraiser, it plays an essential role in ensuring that MAPA’s performing arts programs remain accessible and affordable.”
Unique to the Garden Party is the opportunity to purchase “Garden Green.” Pay $75 and get a Garden Green certificate worth $100 to be spent at the silent and live auctions and the Garden Shoppe. Garden Green is available by calling the MAPA office at 244-8760 (advance purchase only).
