Entries sought for ‘Garden of BE Art Exhibition’
PUUNENE — Recycled plastic is the focus for the “Garden of BE Art Exhibition” presented by Community Work Program.
Organizers will receive work from artists on Sept. 10, 2011, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the historic ‘Iao Theater at 68 N. Market Street in Wailuku.
Artists of all ages and abilities are encouraged to enter this competition, which continues CWD’s mission to focus attention on the needs of our environment — this time in a plastic world.
Artists are asked to use their creative talents to give life to plants, flowers, vines, birds, animals and insects using only discarded plastics. Wire, glue, tape and paint are allowed to assemble and enhance the recycled plastic containers and materials.
Entries will be judged by Tess Cartwright, founder of the “Garden of BE” and author of “The Garden of BE” musical stage play, and Robert Glick, graphic designer and award-winning Maui artist.
Entry is open to anyone. Judging categories include under 13 years of age, ages 13-18, 18 and over, and “Best Group Entry.” Points will be awarded for creativity in the diversity of textures, types and colors of plastics.
Those who finish in the top three will be awarded prizes donated by Maui businesses at the opening of the exhibition, “A Night in the Garden of BE,” at the ‘Iao Theater to benefit the nonprofit Maui OnStage. The event is open to the public, and on that night, the “People’s Choice Award” will be voted on and awarded.
For entry forms, visit any Maui public library or call Community Work Day Program at 877-2524.
“The Garden of BE, A Joyous Musical Fantasy” opens on Sept. 23 at the ‘Iao Theater with additional performances on Sept. 24, 25 and 30, and Oct. 1-2.
