Enjoy music by classical masters at 2011 Summer Masterworks Fest

By Staff | Aug 11, 2011

KIHEI — Musical Voices Maui will present three great works by Vivaldi, Mozart and Bach at The 2011 Maui Summer Masterworks Festival.

The performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 12-13, at Kihei Baptist Chapel at 1655 South Kihei Road.

The program includes Vivaldi’s concerto for two trumpets, Mozart’s “Vesperae solennes de Confessore KV339” and the “Magnificat in D major BWV 243” by J.S. Bach.

The Vivaldi and both sacred choral works will be accompanied by orchestra under the baton of Robert Wills and sung by the Maui Summer Masterworks Chorale comprised of more than 60 of Maui’s finest choral singers.

The two choral works are easily in the ranks of the best works in choral music history.

The Mozart solemn vespers is a musical setting of Psalms 110-113 and then the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55).

Mozart’s piece was traditionally used for vespers around 6 p.m. on Sundays. Embedded within this work is the famous “Laudate Dominum for Soprano” solo and chorus. Mozart composed this piece when he was 24 years old.

Following the intermission, the chorale, soloists and orchestra will perform Bach’s work. Of particular note in the orchestration is the use of two piccolo trumpets, to be played by Lynn Erickson with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Pam Humphrey.

Tickets are $25 for reserved seating in the “sweet spot” in the center of the house. General seating is $15.

Last year’s festival was a great success, with more than 600 people in attendance for Mozart’s “Requiem.”
