Hyatt to host free concerts by Citrus College musicians
KAANAPALI — The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa has arranged a run of live music with a visit from California’s Citrus College Performing Arts from June 30 to July 23.
The Hyatt will host concerts by the college’s highly regarded performing groups, the Blue Note Orchestra and Nightshift, as well as a show-stopping performance of “The Great American Songbook” with Dale Kristien, star of “Phantom of the Opera,” on July 9. Admission is free.
“A Jazzy Summer” kicks off on Thursday, June 30. Resort guests and local residents can enjoy countless live performances around the Hyatt Regency Maui’s grounds.
“No other resort in the state offers high-caliber live entertainment on this level — the frequency of performances spanning almost four weeks, in addition to the exceptional caliber of talent featured, is unheard of,” said Michael Jokovich, the resort’s general manager.
Every day through July 23, Citrus College artists will present a variety of shows, from hip, high-octane pool side entertainment at Umalu, to easy evening jazz at Japengo, to jazzy, swingy, swanky parties in the Ballroom.
Special events for Fourth of July weekend include a Red, White & Blue Party on July 2, a late-night performance by the Blue Note Orchestra on July 3 and the Fourth of July with Nightshift at Umalu.
For the headline event at 7 p.m. on July 9 in the Napili Gardens, Hyatt Regency Maui presents “The Great American Songbook” starring the talented Kristien accompanied by the Blue Note Orchestra.
Previously a cast member of “Phantom of the Opera” on Broadway, Kristien’s illustrious career includes over 1,700 lead performances opposite Michael Crawford in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera.”
For this dazzling, 70-minute concert, she will be accompanied by the nearly 30-piece live orchestra for classic songs from Broadway shows and Hollywood musicals by top composers, including Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and Richard Rodgers.
Valet parking is available. Specialty drinks will be offered at a cash bar.
Each summer, the Hyatt Regency Maui welcomes students from Citrus College for the month-long series.
Located 30 miles from Los Angeles in Glendora, California, Citrus College is recognized as an international leader in art, performance and media education for young artists.
“Hyatt Regency Maui has been an incredibly supportive and generous host venue for Instrumental Music Tours for the past 17 years, graciously providing complimentary accommodations for the students in exchange for exciting live daytime and evening performances,” said Robert Slack, dean of fine and performing arts with Citrus College.
“To elevate this summer’s performances even further, we’re also flying in a world-class string section from Hollywood. This group of musicians is among the who’s who in the recording and music community.”
All concerts, including the event on July 9, are free and open to the public.
