WAILUKU — After seven years, the locally produced radio program Aloha Shorts is ready to spread its wings to the Neighbor Islands.

On Sunday, May 1, at 2:45 p.m., this co-production of Hawaii Public Radio and Bamboo Ridge Press (regularly taped before a live audience in HPR’s intimate Atherton Studio) will stage “On the Road with Aloha Shorts: Maui No Ka ‘Oi” at the historic ‘Iao Theater in Wailuku.

This special event is also a celebration of the recent launch of HPR’s new station, KIPM 89.7 FM, and the Maui residents who made it possible.

The taping will feature five authors with Maui roots read by seven Valley Isle residents: Michael McPherson’s reminiscence of “Toda Drug” by Kathy Collins; Brandy Nalani McDougall’s “Maui” by Marvelee Soon Tahauri; McDougall’s “The Upcountry Drought” by Cassandra Wormser; McDougall’s poem “Waiting for the Sunrise at Haleakala” by Noukahau’oli Revilla; Dana Naone Hall’s “Looking for Signs” by Revilla; Barry Masuda’s “No Mo’ Fish on Maui” by Kalapana Kollars; and an excerpt from Milton Murayama’s “All I Asking for Is My Body,” a depiction of life in the sugar plantation camp of Pu’ukoli’i in the 1930s and ’40s, performed by Joel William Agnew, Pat Masumoto, Collins, Kollars, Devon Nekoba and Aito Simpson Steele.

Two other prose pieces about Maui personalities will complete the afternoon’s literary readings: “Da Mayor of Lahaina” by self-professed “Pidgin Guerilla” Lee Tonouchi, read by Aloha Shorts veteran Nekoba; and “Maui the Demigod,” the final chapter from Steven Goldsberry’s novel, read by Steele.

The program will also include musical sets from two acclaimed Maui musicians — indie/rock artist Gail Swanson and Hawaiian slack key musician George Kahumoku Jr. — whose styles represent the diversity of material embraced by Bamboo Ridge Press and Aloha Shorts.
