Pocket Opera to perform with Maui Pops Orchestra

By Staff | Mar 10, 2011

Maui Pops Orchestra will unite with the Pocket Opera Company of San Francisco to stage a concert-version performance of “Elixir of Love” by Gaetano Donizetti.

KAHULUI — Maui Pops Orchestra will welcome the Pocket Opera Company of San Francisco to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater Sunday, March 13, at 3:30 p.m. for a concert-version performance of “Elixir of Love” by Gaetano Donizetti.

San Francisco Pocket Opera is known for its English translations of famous operas, including this one.

The translations are the work of opera founder and artistic director Donald Pippin, who moved to San Francisco in 1952 and has been part of the city’s music scene ever since.

Pippin’s 80-plus translations are witty and charming, making opera accessible to listeners who otherwise might find this classic art form a bit forbidding.

Pippin will be on hand at the Maui concert to present narratives setting up the various scenes performed by several lead singers from San Francisco. Maui Pops will provide orchestral accompaniment.

The chorus will be made up of local performers from the Olinda Chorale and Musical Voices Maui under the direction of Sarah Oppenheim-Beggs.

The Olinda Chorale is a 16-voice choral ensemble dedicated to the exploration and performance of a wide range of musical styles, from early to modern music, classical to jazz.

A gala dinner with the performers will follow the opera.

Tickets are $75 for the Chinese buffet at the Yokouchi Pavilion Courtyard to be catered by the U.H. Maui College Culinary Academy. There will be entertainment.

Concert tickets are $15, $35, $45 and $55, plus a $3 facility fee.

Call the MACC Box Office at 242-7469 or purchase tickets online at www.mauiarts.org.
