The Brown ‘Ohana to play free concert

By Staff | Mar 3, 2011

LAHAINA — Enjoy great live Hawaiian slack key music by The Brown ‘Ohana at the Baldwin Home lawn on Thursday, March 10, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Bring lunch, mats, chairs, friends and family for this free treat!

For three generations, Maui’s Brown ‘Ohana has helped perpetuate the 160-year-old art of ki ho’alu (Hawaiian slack key guitar).

At a young age, brothers Kevin and Sheldon learned to play the ukulele, steel guitar and slack key with the help of their father, Harry, a talented Hawaiian musician.

In 1970, the Brown brothers went on to form Waiehu Sons, with their growing fame taking them to perform at venues all over Hawaii.

The legacy continued when Kevin began teaching his nine-year-old son, Ikaika. In 1996, at the age of 14, Ikaika released his first solo album, “Kalo Man,” and went on to release two more albums, including the cherished “Three Generations” that features both his father and grandfather.

Relax under the shade trees and enjoy the free concert coordinated by Lahaina Restoration Foundation.

Event seating is limited; blankets, mats and low beach chairs are welcome.

The Baldwin Home Museum is located in the heart of Lahaina on the corner of Front and Dickenson streets.

This concert is part of the foundation’s ongoing Hawaiian Music Series program supported by the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the county Office of Economic Development. Call 661-3262 or visit www.lahainarestoration.org.
