WAILUKU — What happens when words, melodies and a group of Maui musicians and vocalists come together? In this case, it is a new CD titled “Practicing Aloha.”
The aloha-inspired CD produced on Maui by local radio personality and author Cindy Paulos features four-time Grammy Award winner George Kahumoku Jr., Eric Gilliom, Keli’i Kanealii, Gretchen Rhodes, Jamie Lawrence, Kelly Covington, Marty Dread, Joshua Tatofi and Fulton Tashombe.
The CD also hosts an all-star list of back-up musicians, including David Choy, Lenny Costellanos, Mel Martin, Steve Laury and Hutch Hutchinson.
The CD is available in local music, book and gift stores, as well as www.PracticingAloha.com.
Paulos will attend a CD release event at the Baldwin Home in Lahaina on Friday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. She will also appear with Kahumoku, who will perform songs from the CD, on Sunday, Nov. 28, at 11 a.m. at Maui Ocean Center and Barnes & Noble in Lahaina on Sunday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m.
The title track of the CD, “Practice Aloha,” began as a poem written for a website created by Chef Mark Ellman at www.practicealoha.org. Paulos turned her words into a song, then a video. Now, that “Practicing Aloha” song has evolved into a CD with 12 tracks and a chant by Clifford Nae’ole.
“The Practicing Aloha CD was created as a tribute to the beauty and the special aloha spirit that lives here in the islands,” said Paulos. “I am honored that so many of Maui’s top singers and musicians helped make this project become a reality.”
