Entries sought for Photo Maui Contest
LAHAINA — Calling all photographers! Want the chance to win photo gear, software, hardware, cash and other cool stuff — and help Maui County’s keiki in the process?
Pull out your camera, print out your best shots and enter the third annual Photo Maui Exhibition.
Lahaina Arts Society and Lahaina Arts Association are hosting this juried photography exhibition.
Jurors for this year’s show are Randy Hufford and Michael Stark.
A haven for emerging artists in various mediums, LAS and LAA seek entries in two divisions (amateur and professional) with three categories in each: color, monochrome, and digitally enhanced.
Stephen Levine, chair of the exhibition, said, “With digital photography and a digital darkroom, the art of photography has blossomed. While Maui provides some opportunity for photographers, there are many talented photographers whose vision of our world is not seen in any gallery space on Maui. There is no venue for these great images to be shared and seen by others.
“This show is an opportunity to share the talent of people who you won’t ordinarily see in galleries on Maui, as well as some established professionals in a single exhibition dedicated to photography alone.”
All works accepted may be available for sale by the photographer, with the artist receiving 60 percent and the gallery 40 percent.
A portion of all sale proceeds will be used for LAA’s Art Outreach Program. These free art classes for children facing hardships have reached more than 6,000 children in our local community in 2010.
Last year’s event raised enough money to cover almost two months of supplies for these classes.
Applications and copies of the rules can be picked up at Pictures Plus, Picture It Framed, Lahaina Arts Society, Xinia Productions, Maui Photographics, Ben Franklin and Lanai Seating and Art Gallery.
The show will be on display in the Old Jail Gallery in the Old Lahaina Courthouse at 143 Wharf St. in Lahaina from Nov. 1 through Dec. 5.
The opening reception will be held on Friday, Nov. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Photographers must be 18 years of age or older and current Maui County residents.
The show is sponsored by LAS, Picture It Framed, Pictures Plus, South Pacific Photo, Ultimate Whale Watch, onOne Software, Pentax, Mountainsmith, Western Digital, Lensbaby and Lanai Seating.
