Scott Mead’s Paintography series, Lahaina Arts Society’s September Featured Artist Display, includes “Evening Glow.”

LAHAINA — Photographer Scott Mead will discuss his new “Paintography of Paradise” series of images on Friday, Sept. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lahaina Arts Society’s Banyan Tree Gallery in the Old Lahaina Courthouse.

The new series features fine art canvas giclees that begin life as original photography, only to undergo hours of hand-applied, digital brush strokes.

The process evokes the feeling and essence of an oil painting while retaining photographic elements.

“Paintography is what happens when you mix insomnia and lots of coffee,” joked Mead.

“My images, right out of the camera, have a painterly feeling to begin with. But I wanted to take that look to the next level, so when you look at one of my pieces, you really have to ask yourself if it’s a painting or a photograph.”

The Sept. 10 reception will include a talk story session on his photographic techniques.
