Mos Def to perform in Lahaina

Hip Hop artist Mos Def will perform on July 23 at The Maui Theatre in Lahaina.

LAHAINA — The Maui Celebrity Series will continue on Friday, July 23, with Mos Def.

The show will begin at 9:30 p.m. at The Maui Theatre in Old Lahaina Center.

Mos Def is an American actor and rapper. He started his Hip Hop career in a group called Urban Thermo Dynamics, after which he appeared on albums by Da Bush Babees and De La Soul.

With Talib Kwali, he formed the duo Black Star. They released an album, “Black Star,” in 1998. He was also a major force in the underground Hip Hop explosion spearheaded by Rawkus Records in the late 1990s.

As a solo artist, he released the albums “Black on Both Sides” in 1999, “The New Danger” in 2004, “True Magic” in 2006 and “The Ecstatic” in 2009.

Initially recognized for his music, Mos Def’s screen work in this decade has established him as a talented actor.
