Feed My Sheep distributes food to needy in West Maui

Feed My Sheep, a mobile food distribution program, drives trucks into neighborhoods to feed the hungry.
PUUNENE — Increased need for food for people in poverty on Maui prompted an anonymous donation of $100,000 to Feed My Sheep to purchase three trucks.
With the gift, the organization can continue its mission to assure that everyone who needs food on Maui has access to it, said founder, CEO and full-time volunteer Joyce Kawakami.
This small grassroots organization will use these new trucks to distribute food weekly in Hana, Lahaina, Honokowai, Haiku, Kihei and Wailuku, and make essential groceries accessible to all who are below the poverty level.
Feed My Sheep is a group of people working together to feed the hungry in body, mind and spirit. The organization works with the Maui Food Bank and many other food pantries and soup kitchens island-wide.
“To maintain this vital work and keep the people of Maui hunger-free, it is imperative that food and monetary contributions continue to come in, as well as grow, as the numbers of those needing food subsistence has grown. In recent months, the number of people needing help has increased, and food lines are long. In 2009, Feed My Sheep gave food to over 8,000 unduplicated people. Recently, they are experiencing an increase of about 50 new people each week,” Kawakami said.
“Everyone needs help sometimes, and now is the time to help thousands of our Maui ‘ohana.”
The organization passes out bags of groceries to anyone who needs their help, giving out the equivalent of 120,000 meals monthly, as well as emotional support. For information, visit www.FeedMySheepMaui.com or call Kawakami at 872-9100.
