Celebrate the joy of choral singing at ‘Lei of Stars’

By Staff | Mar 11, 2010

KIHEI — The Maui Choral Arts Association (MCAA) will present its fifth annual “Lei of Stars Maui Choral Festival” on Saturday, March 13, at 7 p.m. at Kihei Baptist Chapel.

The Olinda Chorale (Sarah Oppenheim-Beggs, conductor), and U.H. Maui College Chorus (Celia Canty, director) will join MCAA’s own Maui Concert Chorus in the event.

The annual community event celebrates the power and joy of choral singing.

“We are excited to be featuring three choruses from our Maui community,” said Canty, MCAA’s artistic director.

Each chorus performs its own solo works, then all the singers join together on a few selections.

From classical to jazz and Broadway, from African to Latin to Hawaiian songs, there will be selections to appeal to all lovers of choral music. The symphonic pedal harp will be featured in two selections as well.

This is the MCAA’s third concert in its 2009-10 “Tapestries of Sound” season. The 40-member Concert Chorus will perform popular selections from its fall concerts, including the rich and reverberant “Lux Aurumque,” as well as two tunes from the upcoming “Some Enchanted Evening” concert.

Tickets for “Lei of Stars Maui Choral Festival” are $10 in advance until March 12 or $15 at the door. There is a 50 percent discount for students with ID and all youth 18 and under.

Tickets are available from participating chorus singers, by phoning (800) 838-3006, or by purchasing online at MauiMusicArts.org.

Kihei Baptist Chapel is located at 1655 S. Kihei Road.
