Lion dance, safety fair slated at Lahaina Cannery Mall

LAHAINA — Lahaina Cannery Mall will kick off Chinese New Year with a display of martial arts mastery, firecrackers and the traditional “feeding of the lions” on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 2 to 4 p.m.

This cultural experience, led by the enigmatic Au’s Shaolin Arts Society, will usher in “The Year of the Tiger” for West Maui residents.

The family friendly event will be preceded by a performance from Te Tiare Patitifa at 1 p.m.

On Saturday, Feb. 27, Lahaina Cannery Mall will host the 2010 West Maui Safety Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

More than a dozen local, state and federal agencies participate in this afternoon of safety education to share insight on personal safety, crime prevention, disaster preparedness, public health and resource information for children and seniors.

Participating organizations will include Maui County Civil Defense and CERT (emergency preparedness), Maui Police Department (child safety seat inspections), Maui Fire Department (child identification cards), Maui Electric Company (electrical safety, energy conservation, renewable energy), Department of Water Supply (water conservation), U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary (marine safety), county Office on Aging (senior safety), Maui County Hotel & Resort Security Association (visitor safety), Red Cross (emergency safety) and the University of Hawaii Department of Agriculture (food safety).

The free, interactive, educational event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunrise, Lahaina Cannery Mall, Maui Electric Company and the County of Maui. For information, call 661-5304.
