By Staff | Nov 12, 2009

Maui Preparatory Academy will host “Jam Night” on Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. in F-2, the school’s Performing Arts Classroom. The event is open to any high school students in grades 9-12 (bring I.D.); home school students are also welcome. Bring an instrument or borrow one at MPA. The suggested donation is $2. E-mail Vania Jerome at vjerome@mauiprep.org for information.

KAHANA — Young performers from the West Side no longer have to make the long drive around the Pali to take acting classes at Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) in Wailuku.

In response to increased demand from West Maui families for performing arts classes closer to home, MAPA has opened a studio in Kahana Gateway Shopping Center.

MAPA is offering a five-week series of acting classes for students ages eight and up. Taught by Ashlie Welte, the classes will introduce students to the foundations of acting while building self-confidence in a fun and safe learning environment. No previous performance experience is necessary.

Tuition is $95 for the five-week session. MAPA is waiving the registration fee for this introductory series.

Classes run Fridays or Saturdays for five weeks: Nov. 13 and 20 and Dec. 4, 11 and 18 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. ages 8-10, and 5 to 6:30 p.m. for ages 11 and up; and Nov. 14 and 21 and Dec. 5, 12 and 19 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. for ages 8-10, and 10:30 a.m. to noon for ages 11 and up.

MAPA is also offering West Side drama camps for students in grades K-5 on Furlough Fridays. These camps are filled with exciting drama games, imaginative character explorations and dramatic storytelling.

Furlough Friday Drama Camps run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuition is $40 per day per student. No previous experience is necessary. Call 244-8760.
