Workshop to explore slack key guitar and Hawaiian culture
NAPILI – George Kahumoku Jr.’s 12th annual Maui Slack Key Guitar & Ukulele Workshop will be held at the Mauian Hotel from June 21-28.
Registration is still open for this eight-day slack key guitar, ukulele and Hawaiian culture workshop.
Participants will receive instruction in slack key guitar and ukulele, take a day trip to the Kahumoku Farm, see Wednesday’s Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar concert at Napili Kai Beach Resort, learn hula (men and women) and lei making, play in nightly jam sessions and participate in a group guitar and hula performance at the Maui Slack Key Festival.
Music instructors include George Kahumoku Jr., Keoki Kahumoku, Jeff Peterson, Herb Ohta Jr., Bob Brozman, Dennis Kamakahi, Kevin Brown and Richard Ho’opi’i, along with Keoni Manuel (hula) and Maile Yepis (lei making).
Tuition is $1,000, which includes a workshop songbook and theory book, all lunches and dinners (except Wednesday evening) and workshop T-shirt. Hotel accommodations are not included (recommended hotels are The Mauian, Napili Village and Napili Kai Beach Resort).
Each year there are talented, deserving students who need help with tuition.

In related news, the Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Concert Series, hosted by Grammy Award winner George Kahumoku Jr., will present a special multi-artist show on Wednesday, June 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Aloha Pavilion at Napili Kai Beach Resort.
Most of the instructors from the slack key guitar and ukulele workshop will perform, including Keoki Kahumoku, Peterson, Brozman, Kamakahi, Brown, Ho’opi’i and show regulars Peter deAquino and Sterling Seaton.
This is a great opportunity to see many of the series’ regular guest artists all in one fantastic show!

In addition, Brozman and Kahumoku Jr. will play a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
Brozman, a virtuoso slide guitarist and pioneer in finding a common thread among global musical cultures, will join slack key master and storyteller Kahumoku Jr. in an evening of island music from around the world and from Hawaii.
Their duet set will feature selections from their new Hawaiian CD, “Kani Wai-Sound of Water.”
