Willie K to play intimate, free gig at Lahaina Cannery Mall

By Staff | Jun 18, 2009

LAHAINA — Lahaina Cannery Mall will host a special night of free music with the one and only Willie K on Monday, June 22.

The intimate performance, dubbed “A Night with Willie,” begins at 7 p.m.

The goal of the family friendly event is to help raise awareness and support for Hui O Wa‘a Kaulua, the Lahaina nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the Hawaiian culture by offering young people the opportunity to learn about the construction and sailing of authentic Hawaiian sailing canoes.

Hui O Wa‘a Kaulua is currently constructing a 62-foot long double-hulled canoe called Mo‘okiha O Pi‘ilani using traditional methods.

“We’re trying to expand our membership and share what we’re doing with the public,” said Willie Kahaiali‘i, better known as Willie K, who serves as president of Hui O Wa‘a Kaulua.

“This is Maui’s canoe. This is for the whole community. We want to share the Mo‘okiha O Pi‘ilani with everyone. When it hits the water, we want everyone to know what’s going on.”

The group will also have a display updating the community on the status of building the canoe and give prizes away to select attendees.
