By Staff | Jun 4, 2009

LAHAINA — Pull up a beach mat and join the crowd on the lawn of the Baldwin Home Museum for Kanakapila with Poki on Thursday, June 11, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Sponsored by Lahaina Restoration Foundation, the lunchtime concert will feature Pekelo Cosma and be hosted by Allen “Braddah Poki” Pokipala  of Pacific Radio Group.

In 1992, he produced his debut album, “Going to Hana Maui,” which received four Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominations. He garnered the coveted Haku Mele Award for an original Hawaiian language composition at the 30th annual Na Hoku Hanohano Awards ceremony in 2007. His acclaimed album, “Hana by the Sea,” also earned him a nomination as “Male Vocalist of the Year.”

In an effort to fulfill his dream of sharing traditional Hawaiian music with younger generations, Cosma founded and taught the Maui Youth Slack Key Project and worked as an educational assistant with at-risk teens at Baldwin High School’s Alternative Learning Center. He continues to volunteer with youth throughout the island.

While Cosma performs at Kanakapila with Poki, the “Lei Ladies” of the Lahaina-Honolua Senior Citizens Club will string fresh flower lei under the shade of the kou trees on the Baldwin Home Museum lawn.

The Baldwin Home Museum is located on the corner of Front and Dickenson streets in the heart of historic Lahaina.

Kanakapila with Poki — the Hawaiian Music Series in Lahaina — is coordinated by Lahaina Restoration Foundation and sponsored by the county Office of Economic Development and Hawaii Tourism Authority. For a full series schedule, visit www.lahainarestoration.org or call 661-3262 for more information.
