LAHAINA — West Siders can meet County Council candidate Elle Cochran on Friday, March 26, at Canoe’s Restaurant in Lahaina at 5 p.m.

“It’s cool, because the manager is giving me the entire restaurant for the night,” the lifelong West Maui resident said.

Maui Prep students win State Science Olympiad

NAPILI — Maui Preparatory Academy Middle School students continued their winning streak by placing first in their division at the State Science Olympiad on Oahu on March 6.

The ten-member team and their coach, science teacher Carrie DeMott, will travel to the University of Illinois in May to represent Hawaii at the national competition.

Lahainaluna High School senior to attend West Point

LAHAINA — Lahainaluna High School senior Tyler Vanderlaan has accepted a nomination to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point in New York. He will report for duty on June 28.

Seventeen-year-old Vanderlaan, the eldest of Kim and Greg Vanderlaan’s three children, was nominated to attend West Point by Hawaii Second District Rep. Mazie Hirono.

Students encouraged to enter Lahaina News Writing Contest

LAHAINA — Inspired by the life of Edwin “Uncle Ed” Lindsey II (1939-2009), the Lahaina News is sponsoring the first annual “Ka Ho‘olina i Kakau ‘ia” Writing Contest.

The competition is open to all West Side students in grades 6-8 and 9-12.

Local students receive scholarships to attend painting workshops

LAHAINA — Two high school students won scholarships and attended workshops during last month’s Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational.

Carmella Lenta, a senior at Maui Preparatory Academy, participated in Clark Mitchell’s pastel painting workshop, and Lahainaluna High School senior Sienna Nelson participated in Ned Mueller’s oil painting workshop.
