Lahainaluna High School details graduation plans

LAHAINA - Lahainaluna High School last week sent out the following Graduation Commencement Announcement:

Aloha Senior Class of 2020, family and friends. We are pleased to announce an update to our alternative graduation commencement. Through the combined efforts of the school, community, Maui Police Department and the state Department of Transportation, Lahainaluna's graduation commencement will be held exclusively for the graduates of the Class of 2020 on the Lahaina Bypass. While we are fortunate to have the opportunity to truly celebrate our seniors in a special way, it is imperative that everyone adhere to the following rules which will be enforced throughout the ceremony. Should you choose not to adhere to the guidelines below, you will be asked to leave the ceremony.

On Sunday, May 24, at 5 p.m., the main gate will be open at Lahainaluna High School. Please be dressed in your graduation cap and gown and drive onto campus for pre-screening of all graduates. At 5:30 p.m., the main gate will be CLOSED. No late arrivals will be allowed through the gate (no exceptions). ?

Vehicle guidelines: automobiles must be passenger vehicles. No Semi-Trucks, flatbeds or parade-type floats will be allowed. Passengers will NOT be allowed to ride in the bed of a truck. All passengers must remain inside the vehicle.? Each vehicle will be allowed a total of four people (the graduate plus three additional people); in keeping with current state and county regulations, all passengers must reside in the same household.

You will be allowed to decorate your vehicle; however, it must not impede the driver's visibility. Police officers will be present to ensure the safety of all; if a vehicle is deemed unsafe, you will be asked to leave. ?"Burn outs" will not be tolerated.

Vehicles will exit the LHS parking lot, escorted onto the bypass by Maui Police Department.

This is a tobacco- and alcohol-free event.

There will be NO public restrooms available during the event. ?

All vehicles tune into KPOA 93.5 FM. The graduation ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. Graduates' names/accolades, ?classmate speeches, traditional songs and the lighting of the "L" will be a part of the hour-long commencement. ?

All passengers will remain in the vehicle at all times ?

Graduates (ONLY) will stand in front of their vehicle and not deviate throughout a designated time.

There will be no lei exchanges, and there will be no face-to-face contact between graduates and non-family members.

The community is encouraged to join in via KPOA 93.5.

NO ILLEGAL FIREWORKS will be tolerated.

At 8 p.m., the end of the program, all vehicles will be escorted off the bypass by Maui Police Department. ?

On Sunday, May 31, KHON2 will be airing Lahainaluna's graduation on TV at 5 p.m.
