Lahaina News

LAHAINA - The 2020 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational week-long event runs from Saturday, Feb.15, through Sunday, Feb. 23. This nine-day nationally recognized art event brings together 24 top outdoor artists to paint scenes of Maui.

Families and art enthusiasts will enjoy 14 free public art activities on the West Side. In addition, Maui Arts League hosts two fee-based collector/artist receptions: a gourmet awards gala and a more intimate "Take an Artist to Breakfast" event.

Maui Arts League is a community nonprofit with a mission to showcase and build appreciation for visual fine arts.

Visit MauiArtsLeague.org for a full listing of all the invitational events and activities.

See famous 2020 artists from Hawaii: Mark Brown, Mike Carroll, Michael Clements, Joe Fletcher, Carleton Kinkade and Ronaldo Macedo.

Painting scenes of Maui for the first time are top names: Danny Griego from San Diego, CA; Jane Hunt from Boulder, CO; Calvin Liang from Corona, CA; and Randall Stauss from San Rafael, CA.

Maui collectors will recognize these acclaimed returning artists: Suzie Baker of Shenandoah, TX; Greg Barnes of Charlotte, NC; Josh Clare of Paradise, UT; Ken DeWaard from Hope, ME; Mark Fehlman from San Diego, CA; Leon Holmes from Perth, Australia; and Jeff Horn from Costa Mesa, CA.

Don't miss award-winning artists James McGrew from Oswego, OR; Terry Miura of Fair Oaks, CA; Morgan Samuel Price of Altamonte Springs, FL; David Savellano of Alameda, CA; Randall Sexton from Vallejo, CA; Michele Usibelli from Woodway, WA; and Jim Wodark from Orange, CA.

The public may watch all these renowned artists paint Lahaina Harbor, Kapalua Bay and Kaanapali Beach at three scheduled paint-outs. Keiki enjoy seeing them finish artworks in under four hours.

All through Presidents' Week, artists will be painting famous Maui landmarks and competing for "Best of Show" and 15 other awards presented by Maui Arts League.

On Monday evening, Feb. 17, The Pioneer Inn will host the free art lecture "Famous Forgers" by nationally famous art curator Jean Stern and mini painting silent auction.

Tickets are on sale for the gourmet dinner and gala "Art to Heart" on Friday, Feb. 21, at Royal Lahaina Resort. The resort's 4,000-square-foot ballroom becomes an art exhibition of 200-plus original artworks. The art show and award paintings are open to the public Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 22 and 23, when artists will have demonstrations, and Maui Arts League will hold community panel discussion about fine art.

Maui Arts League will also present two three-day workshops for professional and amateur artists of any level.

Michele Usibelli will teach Feb. 12-14, and internationally acclaimed instructor Jane Hunt coaches students Feb. 24-26. Tuition is $450, and spaces are still available.

Advanced workshops like these represent a rare opportunity to learn new techniques and receive consultation from a master artist.
