Applications available for Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation Scholarships

LAHAINA - Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation (HRYF) is a nonprofit charitable corporation founded in 1976. Its main objective is to provide scholarships for Hawaii youth to further their education after high school.

The ten Rotary Clubs on Maui and Lanai are now accepting applications for this scholarship award.

Each Maui County Rotary Club will select a deserving high school student to receive the $5,000 scholarship award.

Macaleigh Hendricks, recipient of the 2018 Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation Scholarship from the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset, spoke at a recent club meeting about her experiences in Europe prior to attending the University of Southern California.

This award is non-transferable and can only be used for the first year of school.

Funds are mailed directly to the school of choice and cannot be deterred for future use.

Applications are available at high school counseling offices or by contacting HRYF Maui Trustee Joanne Laird at mamalrd01@gmail.com.

The application deadline is Feb. 6, 2019.

The Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation was founded by Maurice J. "Sully" Sullivan during his year as Rotary's district governor in Hawaii, 1976-77.

It was Sully's desire to assist Hawaii's high school graduates realize their potential by attending a college or university of their choice here in Hawaii or on the Mainland United States.

He felt that HRYF could be the vehicle to teach young people about the advantages of the free enterprise system, the basis of our democracy.

The HRYF Scholarship Foundation is one of the many Youth Service Projects sponsored by the 51 Rotary Clubs in the State of Hawaii.

Rotary is a leadership organization made up of local business, professional and civic leaders.

Club members meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and get things done in the community.
