Lahainaluna HOSA students qualify for state competition

LAHAINA - On Jan. 15, Lahainaluna High School Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) students attended the 12th District Conference here on Maui.

The conference was held at Kamehameha Schools Maui, where Baldwin, King Kekaulike, Kamehameha Schools Maui and Maui High School students also attended and competed in their respective medical events.

The conference also included professional symposiums for the students to attend.

The Lahainaluna District Team earned many top finishes at the 12th District Conference.

The awards ceremony celebrated students who earned qualifying scores.

Students who will move on and compete at the HOSA State Conference at the Hawaii Convention Center on Oahu on Feb. 22-23 are: Behavioral Health - Paul Gutierrez, first place, and Sierra Carney, second; Human Growth and Development - Caitlin Baclay, first place; Medical Law and Ethics - Dante Gramuglia, second place, and David Advincula, third; Pharmacology - Abigail Akamine, second place; Transcultural Health Care - Ma Eloisa Tumpap, first place; Medical Reading - Rory Delany, first place, and Shanel Mangaoang, second; Nursing Assisting - Khyle Simon, fourth place, and Althea Tejero, fifth; Physical Therapy - Nikki Zamani, first place, and Trinity Belmont, second; Sports Medicine - Kaitlin Hodgins, first place; Veterinary Science - Kaila Wilkinson, second place; Extemporaneous Health Poster - Laie Tancayo, first place, and Jean Ganoy, second; Health Career Display A - Rowel Ansagay, first place, and Isabella Omura, second; Health Education A - third place for the team of Eva Olson, Alexis Matias and Anjanette Aveno; Job Seeking Skills - Leah Werblun, first place, and Francis Bui, second; Prepared Speaking - Grace Takemoto, first place; and Health Career Photography - Samantha Calma, first place.

Shirlene Companerio, Natalie Brown, Chase Uyeda, Kaito Nishiji, Shana Ratliff, Jaela Naha, Zaide Lopez and Shania Tumpap also qualified for the state contest but will not attend.
