Mahalo to Rising Sun Solar for supporting LHS student athletes

By Staff | Oct 12, 2017

Thanks to the generosity of a local sustainability business, the Lahainaluna High School Athletic Training Department has taken a huge step forward in improving the health and welfare of Luna athletes.

Through the outreach efforts of Lahainaluna Athletic Trainer and Assistant Athletic Director Jon Conrad and the community integrity of Rising Sun Solar, the campus facility has been outfitted with a state-of-the-art solar air conditioning system.

Working through years of 90-degree sweltering heat to provide optimum healthcare for Luna student athletes, Trainer Jon set out on a mission earlier this year to research the possibilities of finding a cooling system for the facility that sits in the merciless Lahaina sun throughout every day.

After several dead-end inquiries, he set up a meeting with Rising Sun Solar at their Haiku office with the company owner and a public relations representative.

Literally and figuratively, it became a meeting of positive energy that will exponentially benefit and inspire generations of Lahainaluna students and the West Side community as a whole.

Rising Sun gifted to the community the installation of a solar air conditioning system in the training facility at no cost to the school or the Department of Education. Moreover, the company has generously offered a $350 donation to the Training Department for every new customer that mentions Lahainaluna High School.

“This cooling system brings the room we provide rehabilitation for the sports injuries of Lahainaluna student athletes from the scorching 95-degree heat down to 75 degrees, where we are totally safe from heat injuries. Rising Sun has also offered to donate $350 to the LHS Training Department for every new customer that mentions Lahainaluna. Each donation will help provide medical supplies we are always in need of and always needing to fund-raise for to acquire,” said Conrad.

“Mahalo to Rising Sun Solar for so generously helping the Athletic Training Department provide the best care possible for our student athletes. Every building on the Lahainaluna campus should have this cooling system. It makes perfect sense to use Lahaina’s powerful sun that shines so hot and bright to cool the buildings down,” he concluded.
