Lahainaluna Band thanks Leilani's

The Lahainaluna Band would like to thank Brandy Manibog and Jason Donez of Leilani's on the Beach for their generous donation.

They provided and cooked food items for the shoyu chicken plate that was sold in September.

We would also like to thank Aunty Bea for the paper products. All proceeds went directly to the band in efforts to get to San Diego this December to participate in the Holiday Bowl.

Calling all golfers!!! In efforts to get to the Holiday Bowl, we, the Friends of Lahainaluna Music, will be hosting the first annual Ghost, Goblins and Golf Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Kaanapali Kai Course. Shotgun start at 8 a.m., and an awards cocktail party at Maui Grill at 2 p.m.

Do farm animals merit our compassion and respect?

We are a nation of special observances. There is even a World Day for Farm Animals observed on Oct. 2 (Gandhi's birthday). Apparently it's intended to memorialize the tens of billions of animals abused and killed for food.

Like most others, I always thought of farm animals as "food on the hoof." But when a friend sent me an amazing, endearing Facebook video, it dawned on me that farm animals are much like our family dog - fully deserving of our compassion and respect.

My Internet search showed that they get neither. Male baby chicks are routinely suffocated in plastic garbage bags or ground up alive. Laying hens are crowded into small wire cages that tear out their feathers. Breeding sows are kept pregnant in tiny metal crates. Dairy cows have their babies snatched away immediately upon birth, so we can drink their milk.

It was enough to drive someone to drink. Instead, it drove me to replace the animal products in my diet with a rich variety of plant-based meats and dairy items offered by my grocery store. I have since learned that a cruelty-free diet is also great for my health and for the health of our planet.

Join the fight to protect affordable health care

We've been here before. Republicans are trying, once again, to take health insurance away from tens of millions of people and to make health care a privilege for the wealthy instead of a right for all Americans.

The cruel Graham-Cassidy repeal bill would destroy protections for preexisting conditions, impose an age tax on our kupuna and dismantle Medicaid, which more than 60 million people across the country rely on.

We are all just one diagnosis away from a major illness. One diagnosis away from having to choose between lifesaving surgery and bankruptcy.

The stakes right now are too high for us to stay silent, so I'm doing everything in my power to defeat this mean, ugly health care bill.

But I need you to stand with me and fight to defeat it, too.

Will you add your name to demand that Donald Trump and the GOP Senate protect affordable health care for millions of Americans?

Today, Senator John McCain stood up to oppose this bill, but we need to keep up the pressure to make sure this bill is defeated.

Tell Donald Trump and the GOP leaders in the Senate: do not repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Mahalo for taking action.

Live by God's laws

America and the world have gotten more and more against God, the Word of God, His Laws and Commandments, and His People. Ignorance and disobedience of God's Laws abounds.

Mankind is putting God's abundant love to the test. Man can't even follow His command to "love your neighbor (which means everybody)." Instead of love for fellow man, they have hate and murder in their hearts and minds.

Some examples are North Korea and Iran. Iran wants nukes so they can kill all Israelites and Americans. North Korea wants many nukes so they can wipe out American cities and the millions of humans there, plus other nations that in the past have been historical enemies.

God's salvation plan for mankind is clearly stated in the Old and New Testament. And that God had paid "in full" for mankind's sins, by the shedding of Jesus' (divine) blood on a rugged cross. SEEK GOD'S ONLY WAY!
