Lahainaluna High School to hold meeting for parents

LAHAINA - Parents of senior students at Lahainaluna High School are welcome to attend a parent meeting on Thursday, Aug. 31, at 6 p.m. in the library to review the Senior Project requirements for all senior students, graduation requirements and information about the school festival occurring on Sept. 30.

This is a great opportunity for parents to become familiar with the Senior Project, which is required for all senior students.

Joe Pluta of WMTA to speak at Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset meeting

LAHAINA - On Tuesday, Aug. 29, the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset invites the public to a talk by Joe Pluta, who will discuss the West Maui Taxpayers Association to Lahaina residents.

Pluta, a founding member/director since 1979, helped spearhead developing the Napili Fire and Ambulance Station and making a case for the Certificate of Need for the West Maui Hospital & Medical Center. His new project is emergency planning for West Maui.

The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset's community speaker series takes place during club meetings, which are held on the first and third Tuesday of the month at the Ocean Terrace Restaurant, Royal Lahaina Resort, Kaanapali, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend. New Junior Tennis Program slated

KAANAPALI - Grab a racquet and play tennis! A new Junior Tennis Program is launching at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch on Sept. 4, 2017.

Age group classes for beginner and advanced beginner students ages 7-12 will be offered two days a week, either Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday, depending on age and ability. In addition, a 3.5/4.0 level or higher workout for more advanced students will be offered on Wednesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Maui Humane Society seeks foster homes for dogs

PUUNENE - The Maui Humane Society is seeking immediate short-term foster homes for dogs due to crowded conditions at the organization's kennel.

With dogs coming in almost daily, the kennels are starting to get uncomfortably crowded.

WAILUKU - Hospice Maui will offer its annual volunteer training Sept. 25 to Oct. 7.

Volunteers have been the cornerstone of compassionate care for over 35 years.

Ryan Beenken elected to Lahainaluna SCC post

LAHAINA - The Lahainaluna High School Community Council recently held an online vote to elect its Community Representative.

"Thank you to the many members of the community who took the time to vote, and to Ryan Beenken and Jeff Rogers for their willingness to volunteer their time to support Lahainaluna and our school community," an SCC member wrote. "The 2017-2018 Community Representative to the School Community Council, as selected by a vote of community members, is Ryan Beenken."

The SCC is part of the leadership structure at each school, enabling shared decision-making among principals, teachers, school staff, parents, students and community members to improve student achievement.
