Adult Education returning to West Maui

WEST MAUI - After a long hibernation, the McKinley Community School for Adults-Maui Campus, formerly known as "Adult Ed," is returning to the West Side.

The program seeks 12 or more students who would like to earn their State of Hawaii Adult Community School Diploma. Classes are projected to start in January at a location to be announced.

“He is a Lahaina character; knows everybody. Everybody knows him, especially down at the harbor,” said Theo Morrison of Lahaina Restoration Foundation, referring to Lahaina Larry (above). Larry turned his life around a couple years ago, said Morrison, and he is now working for LRF as an independent contractor directing traffic at Boat Days while construction is in progress at Lahaina Harbor.

Participants must be age 16 or older and take a placement test in order to qualify. Placement tests are offered on the first Thursday of the month at 179 W. Kaahumanu Avenue (entrance on Kane Street). The cost for the placement test is $5 (cash only).

Maui Prep to hold Turkey Run

NAPILI - Come and burn off a few extra calories in anticipation of the holiday season at the seventh annual Maui Preparatory Academy Turkey Run on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 3:30 p.m. on campus.

This family fun event is being held by Maui Prep athletics to promote fitness in our community and as a food drive for Maui Food Bank. The event is open to all students and parents, but students in the third grade and under are asked to run/walk (1.2 miles) with their parents.

The top male and female in each division will receive a turkey as a prize. Participants must bring two canned goods to donate to the Maui Food Bank, and a waiver with a parent signature is required to participate.

Students and parents can register the day of the event at 3 p.m., or e-mail Keenan Reader at kreader@mauiprep .org to register in advance or for more information.

Event to support Young Life

LAHAINA - Young Life Maui, a Christian-based youth organization, will celebrate 15 years here on the Valley Isle with a Fundraiser Dinner and Auction to be held on Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Old Lahaina Prison located at the corner of Wainee and Prison streets in Lahaina.

Andy Claydon, Young Life Maui director, invites one and all to come on down and join the celebration.

There will be a silent auction and gourmet dinner provided by Fleetwood's on Front St. Doors open and the silent auction begins at 5 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. The suggested donation is $25 per ticket. To register, call (808) 205-0594 or e-mail ylmauioffice@gmail.com.

ACS to kick-off 2017 Relay For Life

WAILUKU - The American Cancer Society invites the Maui community to help it kick-off the 2017 Relay For Life season and Paint Maui Purple with a Luminaria Ceremony at Queen Ka'ahumanu Center on Friday, Nov. 4, from 7 to 8 p.m.

The Luminaria Ceremony will be followed by a performance by ukulele band Nevah Too Late. Bags can be purchased at the event for $5, and the proceeds will benefit Relay For Life.

ACS asks the community to Paint Maui Purple to visually depict how Relay For Life brings hope. For more information about this event, call 244-5554.

Church to hold prayer event

KAHANA - Lahaina Christian Fellowship will hold "Power of Prayer" on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The group will unite in prayer for Maui, Hawaii, the USA and the upcoming election.
