Event to benefit the Lahaina Complex tutoring program

WEST MAUI - Beyond the Rainbow Foundation and People for Educational Equality will stage the Anuenue Gala on Oct. 20, 2016 at the Sheraton Maui Resort.

This benefit for the Lahaina Complex After School Tutoring Program will feature dance music by Jimmy Mac & the Kool Kats.

The free weekly magic show at Lahaina Cannery Mall has moved to Saturdays at noon. Maui magician Holden Mowat (above), with his interactive, all-ages magic-comedy performance, will continue to wow audiences at center stage. The magic veteran from the award-winning Kupanaha Magic Dinner Show will perform every Saturday at noon. In addition, on Tuesday, free ukulele lessons start at 5:45 p.m.; free hula lessons are offered at 5 p.m. on Thursday; keiki hula shows start at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday; and Maui Toy Works holds Yu-Gi-Oh Card Sessions from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Volunteer training slated at Hospice Maui

WAILUKU - Hospice Maui will offer its annual volunteer training on Oct. 18-29.

Volunteers have been the corner stone of Hospice Maui's compassionate care for 35 years. Volunteers report the training to be incredibly beneficial to the individuals they have the privilege of serving, and rewarding and transformational for the volunteer.

Visit with teachers at Lahainaluna's Open House

LAHAINA - Lahainaluna High School will hold an Open House on Thursday, Sept. 15, from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Parents and families will be able to visit with the teachers, counselors and administrators. Staff will also distribute information about the Lahainaluna School Festival in October, as well as how to use the new school website and much more.

Free kidney disease education classes offered

KAHULUI - Rainbow Dialysis Clinics last week announced that the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii (NKFH) Maui Office will host kidney disease education classes, known as Kidney Smart, at no cost to the community on the third Tuesday of each month.

These instructor-led kidney health education classes will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about how kidneys function, the effects of kidney disease and the various treatment options available to patients on Maui. They will also give an overview of the role medications, diet and nutrition play in kidney disease management and prevention.

Classes are slated for 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 20, Oct. 18, Nov. 15 and Dec. 13 at the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii Maui Office at 353 Ano St. in Kahului.

The classes are free and open to the public. They are designed for those diagnosed with kidney disease, along with their caregivers, family and friends.

In related news, on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the National Kidney Foundation will hold its "Da Kidney Da Kine" event at Lahaina Cannery Mall.

Free and open to all, the event will feature live entertainment, kidney disease screenings, blood pressure and glucose checks, vision screenings, and interviews with clinicians.
