Grace Baptist Church to hold Vacation Bible School

LAHAINA - Come on down to "Cowabunga Farm" on July 25-29. The free action will take place at Grace Baptist Church at 164 Fleming Road in Lahaina.

Hours are 9 a.m. to noon. Bring your friends ages four through high school to this Vacation Bible School and enjoy exciting Bible stories, songs, puppets, snacks, crafts and a missionary story.

The Hawaiian Civic Club (HCC) awarded three scholarships at the July Second Friday Town Party in Lahaina. Betty’s Beach Cafe’s food donations throughout the year made these scholarships possible, along with event sponsors LahainaTown Action Committee and the County of Maui. Meet council candidate Yuki Lei Sugimura

LAHAINA - The public is invited to join in an evening with Yuki Lei Sugimura on Thursday, July 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Lahaina Civic Center.

Sugimura is a candidate for the Upcountry (Pukalani-Kula-Ulupalakua) residency seat on the County Council.

Come talk story and enjoy local food and entertainment by Kori Kukahiko & Friends and Na Kupuna Ohana Serenaders & Dancers.

Show to feature art by Tremewen, Abernethy

LAHAINA - "Images of Land & Sea 2016," an annual exhibition of recent work by Ian Tremewen and Lorraine Abernethy, will be on display at Village Galleries from July 22 to Aug. 25.

An Artists' Reception will be held on Friday, July 22, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the 120 Dickenson St. gallery.

Mondo Kane to perform at art event

LAHAINA - Mondo Kane will perform his new release, "On a Sweet Lahaina Night," at a reception on Thursday, July 21, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Kingwell Island Art at 834 Front St., #103.

The recording features Barry Flanagan and cover art by Jim Kingwell. Kingwell will be painting the work inspired by Kane's song.

Goodwill Hawaii opens donation center

KIHEI - Goodwill Hawaii has opened a new attended donation center (ADC) in Kihei at 115 E. Lipoa Place to serve the South Maui community.

The Kihei center is open seven days a week: Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Every year, Goodwill Hawaii collects more than 400,000 pounds of donations from the Maui community, which generates more than $450,000 in revenue to provide job training, career development and educational advancement assistance to more than 1,000 Valley Isle residents struggling to find work because of employment barriers.

In addition to the new Kihei location, Maui residents may drop off their gently used household items and clothing to any of the following Goodwill donation centers: Goodwill Hawaii Store and Donation Center, 250 Alamaha St., Suite N9, Kahului; Queen Ka'ahumanu Center in Kahului; and the Maui Disposal Redemption and Recycle Center at 60 Kanoa St. in Wailuku.

Ka Hale A Ke Ola benefitting from Ohana Fuels program

WAILUKU - Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers Inc. has been selected as the beneficiary of Ohana Fuels' "Fuel Up. Do Good" program.

Ohana Fuels partners with nonprofit organizations that serve the needs of the local community and donates a portion of every gallon of gasoline purchased at all the Ohana Fuels stations in that community.

During the months of July through September 2016, a portion of all sales at all Maui Ohana Fuels locations will be donated to Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers Inc. Learn more at www.ohanafuels.com.

Meeting to detail Lahaina Harbor Dredging Project

LAHAINA - At a meeting on Thursday, Aug. 4, Rep. Angus McKelvey, Sen. Rosalyn Baker, state Department of Land and Natural Resources officials and Lt. Liezl A. Nicholas of the U.S. Coast Guard will provide all harbor users and stakeholders with an update on the Lahaina Harbor Dredging Project along with a proposed timetable.

The meeting will be held at the Pioneer Inn's Snug Harbor Room at 5:30 p.m.

According to Rep. McKelvey, the dredging project is of importance because the shallow depth of the entrance channel could pose safety concerns to harbor mariners.

Donate slippers for school children

LAHAINA - Maui Lions Club and Mauna Kahalawai Lions Branch Club will hold their eighth annual Slipper Drive at Lahaina Cannery Mall (in front of Longs Drugs) on Saturday, July 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All slippers will be delivered to local schools and will be distributed by the school nurse to children who need slippers during the school year.

To prevent any health concerns, drop off new slippers or monetary donations to support this important community event. The goal this year, as in years past, is to collect 400 pairs of slippers.
